Dongmakkhai to become a new city area
The allocation of land for new government offices in the Dongmakkhai area of Xaythany district has now been completed after works were progressed over the past year, a senior official from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment confirmed yesterday.
An area of 800 hectares of conservation forest in Dongmakkhai area will be utilised for this development project.
Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Dr Akhom Tounalom told Vientiane Times yesterday that surveying to mark the land allotments and land clearance for road construction has now been completed.
Of this area, about 300 hectares will be dedicated to housing the government offices and necessary roads while the rest will be maintained as conservation forest.
“It is a forest conservation area, but it is damaged,” Dr Akhom said.
Surveying and marking the plots of land took place during the first phase of the project. The area for building offices has been divided into some 58 separate plots and each parcel is between 2-4 hectares in size.
Deputy Director General of the Land Administration Department Mr Khamlek Phetkommaly said that now the department is preparing to submit the land plan to the government, which will make the final decisions as to which plots of land are suitable for which ministries or offices.
Mr Khamlek said that the new site will be developed as a new city area of Vientiane over the coming years. So far, the Ministry of Justice and Vientiane Water Resources and Environment Department have entered the site and their new buildings are already under construction.
The project will develop four main roads which connect with Road No 10. Each road will be 40m in width, linked via a grid pattern of connecting roads.
Five connecting roads 30m in width will run perpendicular to t he main thoroughfares. The land required for the roads has already been cleared to allow road works to commence.
Mr Khamlek said that actual roa d construction and the installation of water supplies is the responsibility of the city planning and housing department, which will conduct the survey and design, including drawing up budget proposals for the governm ent in relation to these works.
The project site covers the area in the three villages of Dongmakkhai, Nonsa-ad and Latkhouay. Some parts of this forest conservation area were damaged decades ago while local people have been using the land in this area for farming.
The development project comes under the capital’s urban development plan.
